Finding Your Singular "Why" for Pursuing Projects
When we embark on a new project, it's easy to get caught up in the excitement of the idea itself. We envision the end result, the problems it will solve, the benefits it will bring. But as the project progresses and challenges inevitably arise, our initial enthusiasm can start to wane. That's where understanding our singular "why" comes in, it's the one core reason that drives us to see the project through, even when the going gets tough.
Why Your "Why" Matters
Your "why" is the north star that guides your project. It's the purpose behind the purpose, the motivation that propels you forward. When you're clear on your "why," you'll be more focused, more resilient, and more likely to overcome the obstacles that stand in your way.
Identifying Your Singular "Why"
So, how do you uncover your singular "why"? It's not always as simple as it sounds. Our motivations can be complex, layered, and sometimes difficult to put into words. But here are a few strategies to help you get started:
Reflect on Past Projects: Look back on projects you've pursued in the past. What drove you to start them? What kept you going when things got difficult? Are there any common themes or threads that emerge?
Ask Yourself Questions: What problem am I trying to solve with this project? How will achieving this outcome make me feel? What values is this project aligned with?
Simplify and Clarify: Once you have some ideas, try to distill them down to a single sentence or phrase. Make it as specific and concrete as possible.
Examples of Singular "Whys"
"I want to create a mobile app that makes meal planning easier and healthier because I believe everyone deserves access to nutritious food, no matter their busy schedule or cooking skills."
"I'm building an online course on photography because I'm passionate about empowering others to capture and express their unique perspective on the world."
"My goal is to launch a sustainable clothing line that combats fast fashion and supports fair labor practices because I believe in making choices that align with my values, even in the way I dress."
Putting Your "Why" into Action
Once you've identified your "why," it's crucial to keep it front and center as you work on your project. Here are a few ways to do that:
Write it Down: Like we mentioned in last weeks blog, put your "why" in writing and post it somewhere you'll see it every day – on your desk, on your fridge, as a reminder on your phone.
Connect with Your "Why" Regularly: Schedule time each week to reflect on your "why" and how it relates to the work you're doing. Ask yourself if you're staying true to your purpose.
Let Your "Why" Guide Decisions: When faced with choices or challenges, refer back to your "why." Does this decision align with my core motivation? Will this help me achieve my ultimate goal?
Finding your singular "why" takes some introspection and honesty with yourself. But the clarity and direction it provides is invaluable. With your "why" as your guide, you'll be more inspired, more driven, and more likely to bring your project to life in a way that truly fulfills you.
Are you ready to let your "why" lead the way? Reflect on the core reason that drives your project and make it the foundation of every decision you make.
